Fitters

What do they do?

VR Ltd employs almost 900 fitters. Fitters work at six depots, in Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Kouvola, Joensuu and Oulu, and at two workshops in Hyvinkää and Pieksämäki.

The duties of a fitter involve various service and maintenance work on rail rolling stock. At the workshops they also refurbish and make alterations to old rolling stock. Small series of freight wagons are also produced at Pieksämäki.

What are the requirements?

For a mechanical fitter, suitable vocational qualifications are in vehicle mechanics, general mechanics or metal working. For an electrical fitter, suitable basic vocational qualifications are as an electrician, or in electronics or automation. VR provides initial training for its fitters in railway rolling stock maintenance and gives the necessary training on the job.

Railway rolling stock is mainly serviced and maintained indoors in maintenance sheds, but this also takes place outside in the marshalling yards. The work requires good physical condition, since fitters get much physical exercise: they climb up onto trains, wagons and engines and work on their roofs.

A fitter carries out responsible shift work that requires accuracy. In service and maintenance work they have to observe the rail safety regulations. Fitters work on their own and in teams.

What are the opportunities?

VR gives the opportunity to develop into a skilled professional in varied maintenance work on railway rolling stock. As they gain experience and knowhow, fitters can apply for duties for example as consultants or work supervisors.
