What do they do?

Some 130 people work in railway design at VR-Track, carrying out work involving geotechnics, rock engineering, substructure construction, and control and safety systems, and in track and traffic planning.

Design engineers provide expert services in their field in different customer projects. Their duties include carrying out studies relating to the railway environment, construction and general planning, checking plans, and needs analyses. Design engineers also participate in research and development.

VR-Track’s biggest customer in Finland is the Finnish Rail Administration, which owns the national rail network. Other customers include municipalities, ports and industrial plants. VR-Track also carries out projects in the other Nordic countries and in the Baltic countries.

What are the requirements?

Appropriate qualifications for a design engineer are a master’s or ordinary degree in engineering. VR-Track arranges the necessary special training for the railway sector for its personnel. In their work design engineers need to be able to use design software. Experience of project work is an advantage. Design engineers are expected to have an active, customer-focused approach and to show initiative in their work. Flexibility and teamwork skills are also important.
