Improving accessibility and tidiness on trains and at stations
• In July 2008, the Tampere Travel Centre tunnel was opened to the public, improving access to the station area for people with special needs and for other visitors.
• The new city trains purchased by Pääkaupunkiseudun Junakalusto Oy will enter into service in autumn 2009. Most of the new trains have low floors and there are no doors to impede movement between passenger compartments and vestibules.
• Helsinki railway station was declared a smoke-free zone in October 2008, partly in response to customer feedback, and smoking by customers and personnel in the station area was restricted.
• Regular cleanliness inspections started at stations.
• The number of cleaning rounds on trains during a journey and at intermediate stations was increased during 2008 to provide customers with more comfortable travel. The emphasis in these extra cleaning rounds is on keeping the toilet facilities and family compartments clean. Cleaning will also be increased in future, particularly on trains running during peak seasons.
