Many different professions


People work in a very wide range of different professions at VR. In 2008 VR Group employed about 12,500 people. Most of them, 59%, worked in jobs on the railways.

The largest professional group was locomotive drivers, on average more than 1,800 in 2008. Other large employee groups were marshalling yard workers, drivers of road vehicles, conductors, fitters and traffic controllers.

Most employees work in Finland. The largest number of jobs is in the South Finland area, but VR is a major employer throughout the country. Altogether some 300 employees work permanently abroad.

Long careers

Most employees have a long career with the VR Group. The average length of service in 2008 was 22 years.

Most of the Group’s personnel are permanent employees, with less than 300 employed under fixed-term contracts. Most fixed-terms jobs are in the summer, when VR-Track employs 200–300 seasonal workers for track maintenance and construction.
