VR is committed to comprehensive and open environmental communications. The Group participates in many environmental projects.
• VR supports the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation (SLL) in conserving traditional landscape. In 2008, VR donated € 70,000 to the work. VR’s cooperation with SLL continues in 2009.
• In the autumn VR participates in Finland’s National Energy Saving Week and in the Ilmastotalkoot climate campaign.
• In 2008 VR posted an emission counter on its website that allows customers to compare the energy consumption and emissions using different forms of transport for 58 journeys between different places in Finland.
• VR conducted an environmental campaign called ‘Train’ in 2008 that won an award in the AdProfit competition as the year’s best campaign.
• An environmental initiative campaign was arranged for the Group’s personnel in May 2008. Most initiatives related to improving waste management and recycling or to energy savings.
• Environmental issues are prominently presented in personnel magazines and on the company’s intranet.
• Environmental issues are also addressed in the induction training of new employees.
• VR’s Head Office has joined WWF Finland’s Green Office network, which aims to reduce the environmental impacts of office work by reducing the consumption of energy and paper and improving waste separation and recycling.
