VR ensures that the land areas owned by the Group cause no impacts on the environment or on people’s health. The Group is also committed to cleaning up fuelling depots and filling points for diesel locomotive fuel, and to removing all underground fuel tanks.
In 2008 VR spent M€ 3.2 million on soil surveys and decontamination.
Largest soil decontamination project at Pasila workshop
VR’s largest soil decontamination project was the conversion of the Pasila workshop area into a residential area. Extensive decontamination work was required during the renovation of the Ilmala marshalling yard, since it is located on top of a former landfill site.
VR is carrying out a long-term programme to modernize fuelling depots and to decontaminate polluted land areas. In 2008 VR modernized the fuelling depots in Iisalmi and Hamina, and removed some underground oil tanks and polluted soil in the Hyvinkää workshop area.
