No accidents in transporting hazardous substances

VR endeavours to ensure that no serious accidents or leakages occur during the transportation of hazardous substances.

In 2008 VR carried by rail altogether 6.3 million tonnes of substances classified as dangerous. There were no cases of leakage during transport that were harmful to the environment or to people’s health. A total of eight minor leaks were registered, which were mainly caused by defective valves.

To prevent leakages, VR tested thermal imaging technology at the Vainikkala border station to check the sealing of the valves in tanker wagons. The automatic leak detection appliance in Utti was upgraded.
