VR continuously develops its waste management and recycling systems. The Group’s waste management complies with local regulations. VR collects and sorts paper, cardboard and biowaste, as well as timber, metal and glass. The largest batches consist of scrapped stock.
VR reduces the volume of landfill waste by collecting energy waste. VR generated 1,637 tonnes of hazardous waste, mostly oil-contaminated waste.
VR started the refurbishment of restaurant cars on InterCity trains started in 2008, which when completed will enable the separation of biowaste in the cars.
Water consumption by properties, buildings and stock maintenance was 219,000 cubic metres, compared to 214,000 cubic metres in the previous year. Wastewater generated by stock maintenance is also led to a municipal sewage treatment plant.
