Growth in international operations

The VR Group has expanded its operations in international markets. Carryings over the border with Russia account for a substantial proportion of VR’s total freight volumes. Passenger services to Russia are also expanding. VR-Track has track construction projects in Sweden and the Baltic countries, while Transpoint has offices and services in a number of European countries.

EU imposes requirements

EU legislation has an impact on the VR Group’s operating environment. The EU’s transport policy highlights competitiveness and logistics.

In compliance with EU legislation, Finland’s rail freight services were opened to competition in 2007. The possibility of introducing competitive tendering for passenger services is also being investigated.

The EU’s Regulation on Rail Passengers’ Rights sets new requirements for ensuring the basic rights of passengers with reduced mobility, and defines passengers’ rights in cases of delay. The new regulation comes into force towards the end of 2009. VR has prepared for the change in cooperation with public authorities.
