The level of rail safety was once again extremely good in 2008. There were no serious accidents in rail services caused by collisions or derailment and resulting in injury, and no serious accidents occurred during the transportation of hazardous substances.
Three employees were seriously injured during shunting: one at a level crossing accident, one in a collision between track machinery units, and one in a collision between wagons and a fork-lift truck.
Increase in number of level crossing accidents
The number of level crossing accidents increased compared to the previous year, although the number of fatalities declined. In 2008 there were a total of 58 accidents at level crossings, in which 8 people died and 19 were injured.
The number of traffic accidents in the Group’s road services increased. There were 289 accidents in 2008 in which 73 people were injured, but there were no fatal accidents or serious injuries.
