Rail transport produces less emissions and consumes less energy than other modes of transport.
Therefore, it plays an essential role in reducing transport emissions. VR's logistics business, VR Transpoint, actively invests in three key growth areas that support the green transition: industrial investments, green transition investments and combined transport.
In October, about 1.4 million journeys were made in long-distance traffic, an 8% increase from the previous year that was mainly due to the growth of travel on weekends. In total, 12.6 million long-distance journeys were made in January–October this year. About 1.9 million tonnes of goods were transported by rail in October, and a total of 19.1 million tonnes were transported by rail in January–October. The volume of freight traffic decreased by 23% from the previous year due to the downturn in the industrial sector and the end of Eastern traffic.
In September, about 1.3 million journeys were made in long-distance traffic, a 7% increase from the previous year that was mainly due to the growth in travel on weekdays. In total, 11.2 million long-distance journeys were made in January–September this year. About 1.6 million tonnes of goods were transported by rail in September, and a total of 17.2 million tonnes have been transported by rail in January–September. The volume of freight traffic decreased by 33% from the previous year due to the downturn in the industrial sector and the end of Eastern traffic.
Estonian railway company Elron has renewed maintenance contract of its Flirt train bogies with VR FleetCare aftear an international tender. The three-year agreement covers the periodic maintenance of bogies and traction wheelsets for 38 Flirt trains. The bogie maintenance will take place at VR FleetCare's component workshop in Pieksämäki, where optimised production lines for bogie and wheelset maintenance have been established.

In May, about 1.3 million domestic long-distance journeys were made and approximately 2.1 million tonnes of goods were transported by rail. In total, nearly six million domestic long-distance journeys were made and 10.1 million tonnes of goods were transported by rail in January–May this year.
