Delivery of new night train cars delayed

We previously announced that VR’s new night train cars would enter service during 2025. Some of the new cars have already been seen in test runs on Finnish tracks. The project is in its final stages, but Skoda has encountered unexpected challenges in its supply chains. As a result, the delivery delay will push the introduction of the new cars into 2026. VR and Skoda are working together to minimize the delay.
“This situation is very unfortunate, as both VR employees and our customers have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new night train cars. However, work on the project continues intensively — for example, training for trainers and internal testing are progressing as planned,” says Marika Schugk, VR’s Director of Customer Experience and Service Development.
Building, testing, and commissioning new rolling stock is a lengthy process that carefully considers all aspects related to technical functionality, safety, and passenger comfort. The cars were ordered from Skoda in early 2023. They will be added to service once completed. We will provide more detailed information as the schedule becomes clearer.
