VR appoints Meri Vainikka as SVP Long-distance Traffic and member of VR’s Leadership Team

VR has appointed Meri Vainikka, M.Sc. (Economics) as Senior Vice President for Long-distance Traffic and a member of VR’s Leadership Team. She will take up her position on 26 March 2026 and will report to CEO Elisa Markula.

In her role, Vainikka will be responsible for leading and developing VR’s long-distance traffic business in Finland and Sweden. She has previously served as Vice President and Managing Director for AC EMEA and PPG Tikkurila, as well as held several senior leadership positions at Hartwall, L’Oréal and Mars.

“Meri brings VR strong and versatile experience in consumer business, international leadership and delivering transformation. We are accelerating the transformation of VR to strengthen our position as a modern, data‑driven and value‑based service company in travel and transportation. Meri’s track record in delivering profitability, growing market share and leading large teams under full P&L responsibility will further reinforce our capability to grow and develop long‑distance traffic in both Finland and Sweden. I warmly welcome Meri to VR’s transformation journey,” says Elisa Markula.

Markula also thanks Antti Tapionlinna, who has been responsible in leading long‑distance traffic on an interim basis since August 2025.

“I want to thank Antti for his important contribution and commitment during the transition period. Under his leadership, the operational performance and development work in long-distance traffic have continued smoothly while preparing for the permanent recruitment.”

Meri Vainikka says she is excited about her new role.

“I am delighted to join VR and to develop long-distance rail services, which play a key role in low-emission mobility and travel. We have a strong foundation – VR’s customer experience in long-distance traffic is excellent both in Finland and Sweden, and last year more than 16 million long-distance journeys were made in Finland, marking a new record. It is inspiring to work together with talented professionals to further strengthen the attractiveness of train travel and support business growth in both countries. I am looking forward to working with VR’s skilled personnel,” Vainikka says.
