VR introduces new permanently lower fares

VR will permanently reduce domestic long-distance fares by approximately one-fourth. The new, simplified fare structure with the new, lower fare levels will be on sale as of today.

-Finns have long been wishing for cheaper train tickets and we are pleased to be able to respond to this wish. Our customers commend the train and say it is a carefree, ecological and comfortable mode of travel; however, ticket prices have been criticised in the past few years. Previous campaign fares have helped increase passenger figures on the major routes. Our new affordable fares will now be offered for travel all over Finland, says Maisa Romanainen, Senior Vice President for VR Passenger Services.

The average price of train tickets will fall by about one quarter; the decrease in the price level varies by route. The new pricing model will also bring affordable prices to routes on which VR’s popular campaign prices have not been available recently.

The new prices will come into force immediately, and tickets can be bought from the VR Online Shop, VR Mobile, VR Customer Care, ticket offices, travel agencies, ticket vending machines, trains and R-Kioskis from today.

Simplified pricing

We have reduced the number of ticket types and simplified our pricing. Our new ticket types are the Saver ticket and the Basic ticket. Our customers can also tailor these tickets according to their needs – by adding Cancellation insurance or by booking a more comfortable seat.

The Saver ticket is always the most affordable choice for all passengers on all long-distance routes. Only a limited number of Saver tickets are available per train and no other discounts are given. Saver tickets become available 60 days before your departure.

The Basic ticket has three different price levels. The earlier the passenger buys a Basic ticket the cheaper it is. The busiest trains are the most expensive. Student, pensioner and child discounts will be given on the Basic ticket price.
