VR to sell surplus passenger carriages

VR will put a total of 29 IC single-deck carriages and 22 so-called 'blue' carriages up for sale during the year 2024. The carriages being offered for sale have been removed from commercial passenger service as redundant. More detailed information about the sales process will be published on VR's website in January 2024.

VR will offer a total of 29 old IC single-deck carriages of the Ex and Expt types, as well as 22 so-called 'blue' carriages for sale. The carriages will be available for sale in the early part of 2024. While suitable for passenger traffic, these carriages are towards the end of their life cycle. The operational readiness of the carriages can be extended through maintenance and refurbishment. The Ex and Expt carriages are not wheelchair accessible, and they do not have air conditioning.

"The carriages now being offered for sale have served as reserve equipment, and some of them have been in commercial use until December 2023. With the more efficient use of rolling stock and better planning, these passenger carriages are now redundant for us. We want to contribute to promoting the growth and competition in the rail market in Finland, for example by divesting surplus diesel locomotives, passenger carriages, and station properties," says VR's CEO Elisa Markula.

More detailed information about the sales process and the equipment for sale will be published on VR's website in January 2024.

VR supports the implementation of the government program and, through its own active measures, seeks to promote the growth and competition in the rail market in Finland. In November, the company announced that it would put approximately ten operational diesel locomotives up for sale during the year 2024.
