VR wins new rail traffic contract in Sweden

VR expanded its operations to Sweden through a transaction that started on 1 July 2022, and is now actively participating in regional public transport tenders there. VR Sweden has been selected as the new operator of Tåg i Bergslagen. The new term of the contract currently managed by SJ begins on 10 December 2023.

VR Sweden currently operates in Stockholm city traffic, as well as in regional traffic in southern Sweden and eastern Götaland. In Sweden, the market for contractual public transport is many times larger than in Finland. There are 21 regions which tender regional traffic.

Today, VR Sweden has been selected as the new operator of train traffic in the region of Bergslagen. The contract will come into effect in December 2023. This is a 10-year contract with an option of one additional year. This is the first contract VR Sweden has concluded since VR acquired the company on 1 July 2022.

The value of the contract is SEK 3.9 billion for the contract period, which is approximately EUR 360 million. It provides work for 200 employees.

“In Sweden, VR actively participates in regional tendering, where the client owns the rolling stock in the same way as in Finland, in the capital region’s HSL commuter traffic. Winning such a large and significant contract is a sign that local public transport operators value our services,” says Topi Simola, Acting Managing Director of VR Sweden.

The decision to award the contract may be challenged within 10 days of its publication. If the contract is not challenged, it will be finally signed.
