Domestic fleet production strengthens the security of supply
The rail fleet maintenance company and wagon manufacturer VR FleetCare and UPM Forest have concluded an agreement on the delivery of over 150 roundwood wagons. The first wagons will start operating by the end of 2026, and the full wagon series will be delivered by 2028.
VR has set ambitious science-based targets for reducing emissions: net-zero to be reached by 2040
The international Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has verified VR’s near-term target and long-term targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The targets are aligned with the level of reduction needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C. VR aims for reducing half of its emissions during the next seven years and reaching net-zero emissions by 2040.

VR FleetCare developed transfer bogies – the solution facilitates the transfer of rolling stock from Sweden to Finland for maintenance
On 9 January 2026, SJ’s first X40 electric train arrived in Oulu by rail from Sweden via Haaparanta and Tornio using the transfer bogies developed by VR FleetCare. In future, the solution will enable the transfer of European gauge rolling stock by rail from Sweden to VR FleetCare’s locations in Finland for maintenance or modernisation. Innovation supports sustainable development and makes the transfer of rolling stock more efficient.
Already 160 years on the rails
Regular train traffic started between Helsinki and Hämeenlinna on 17 March 1862. Railways have played a key role in the development of Finnish society – and continue to do so.
