Megatrends support rail transport 

Climate change is one of the key megatrends of our time, and combatting it requires increased rail transport. Rail transport is one of the most low-emission and most energy-efficient modes of transport. It generates only about one per cent of all emissions from transport. 95% of our passenger trains and 80% of our freight trains run fossil-free on electricity.  

Finland’s sustainable growth and the green transition require the transport of people and goods to be moved to the railways. This is why the growth of rail transport in Finland is key to achieving the country’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2035. 

Another megatrend affecting our operations is urbanisation, due to which passengers now travel between large cities and expect direct and fast connections.
